The​ ​figure​ ​of​ ​the​ ​rooster​ ​of​ ​Barcelos​ ​comes​ ​from​ ​the​ ​interesting​ ​popular​ ​legend​ ​that​ ​transports​ ​Barcelos​ ​to​ ​medieval​ ​times,​ ​and​ ​which​ ​tells​ ​the​ ​story​ ​of​ ​a​ ​pilgrim​ ​on​ ​his​ ​way​ ​to​ ​Santiago​ ​de​ ​Compostela,​ ​who​ ​was​ ​miraculously​ ​saved​ ​from​ ​the​ ​gallows,​ ​thanks​ ​to​ ​Santiago,​ ​when​ ​a​ ​rooster​ ​crowed​ ​made​ ​itself​ ​heard​ ​in​ ​a​ ​surprising​ ​way.
It​ ​was​ ​from​ ​the​ ​50s​ ​and​ ​60s​ ​that​ ​the​ ​rooster​ ​of​ ​Barcelos​ ​became​ ​a​ ​symbol​ ​of​ ​national​ ​tourism​ ​and​ ​an​ ​icon​ ​of​ ​a​ ​nation's​ ​identity.
